For the past four years we've seen large holes in the ground along the canal and wondered what lived there but we had never seen anything. This year we snuck up very slowly and discovered that each hole was occupied by a Florida land crab - a very big crab!
Here's a zoomed in pic which clearly shows their extra-large right claw!

Jay/Mom - That last crab pic reminds me of the "lobstrosities" in Stephen King's Drawing of the Three book (in Dark Tower series). Very alien!
