We had a wonderful time at the Mid-Atlantic Truck Camper Rally in Temperanceville, Virginia last weekend. This is the view of the bay off of Chesapeake Bay. The weather was good, mild, sunny, breezy, cool at night.
It was absolutely amazing to see about 125 truck campers. The owners come from all walks of life, all stages of life, and they came from all over the eastern U.S. We were the only ones from NJ. Our goody bag was filled with all sorts of cool stuff. John's wearing his new RV.net t-shirt.
These are just some of the new truck campers on display. We got a kick out of going in all of them and comparing them to ours, which we still like best and which is best suited to us.
This tent was the perfect place for Friday's events: crab feast lunch, seminars, pot luck dinner, DJ/kareoke, and the raffle. Saturday's events included a useful GPS/DeLorme software mapping seminar and a full-timing seminar. We enjoyed both. Both evenings we enjoyed cocktail/social hour with all of the other attendees from the northeast region group at a campsite near ours. We'd met all of them last spring at the NE rally in Vermont. What a friendly group. Many people remembered us. The name tags indicated not only our first names but also our screen names so you could figure out who people were. Most of the people here actively post or read the truck camper forum on RV.net. John's the resident expert for us. If you post a question you'll have an answer in 20 minutes! Saturday evening there was more music and kareoke under the tent, and the drawing of prizes. Even though we purchased the same amount of tickets as everyone else (an arm's length) we didn't win any prizes while some people won several. The skeeters came out at night, luckily it was cool enough for long shirts and pants, even jackets the second night.
Our camper is the second one on the left. It was just amazing to see practically the entire campground taken over by truck campers. The regular seasonal campers knew enough to stay away. We did a lot of walking around the campground, looking, talking, visiting and walking out to the water - no golf carts for us!
The local Virginia contigent was plentiful. Here you can see them all together. Their rigs are custom outfitted for camping on the beach. They have large platforms or decks on the back for storage and large racks on the front for coolers, complete with rod holders. Surf fishing is a popular pasttime for these, mostly young families.
Ron's sprucing his up for the Best Rig competition. You can see the deck on the back of the one on the left and the rack on the front of the other one. Pretty useful way to add storage.
