Jim is all ready to go in the Peak Race Ultra Marathon (50K, actually the course was 33 miles).

Also starting at 6:00 AM are the 50 mile racers. That's right - 50 miles!!

The racers disappear into the mist. The course took them all over the mountains on a very hilly, rugged course.

All the runners passed by this aid station at 12 and 18 miles. We were able to drive to it as it was a few miles from the farm. It was good to see Jim both times. He grabbed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, some banana slices and a volunteer filled his water bottles with Gatorade. Trenton wishes Daddy good luck as he continues on his way. We wouldn't be able to see him again until the end of the race because the course headed back into the mountains.

Oliver's shirt says, "Who's Your Daddy?" - his daddy's an ultra marathon runner!

John's 10 mile race started while Jim's race was still in progress, at noon. Luckily it was warm but not too hot that day. John's standing by the trophy table at the finish line.

The biggest ones are for the male and female winners in each of the 3 races.

John's race started down the road a couple of miles at the farm owner's home. I was able to hitch a ride with a race organizer and surprised John by being there to see him off.

They ran down this road and along the trees and then into the woods, eventually meeting up with the same race course as the other 2 races.

So I arrived back at the farm where Sheryl was starting to give the boys lunch in the camper. Jason was nearby in the barn. We were expecting the first 50K racers in about 45 minutes. All of sudden we heard a whoop from the finish line. I grabbed my camera and ran out of the camper to see who won. It was JIM!! Words can't describe how happy we all were! Even the race organizers weren't all by the finish line. Wish I had a picture of him crossing the line, oh well, the one above is only seconds later. He was tired but also pumped that he won! His time was an incredible 6 hours, 22 minutes and 2 seconds.

Here he is with his big trophy. People brought him all kinds of food which he devoured - a burger, chips, a veggie burger, Zico coconut water drink, and a beer.

Sheryl and the boys share in the excitement.

Here comes John running toward the finish line! Please go to
Sheryl's blog to see video of John finishing and some very good pictures of him, too. I just didn't get that many good pics but she did.

Trenton gave Grampack his trophy. He finished the 10 mile race in an unbelievable 2 hours and 45 minutes, beating several people. He jogged a lot and hiked very fast, doing his power-walk, up the steep hills. He was hot and tired and pleased with his accomplishment. Way to go!

John and Jim are all cleaned up and relaxing with a beer, cheering the other runners as they crossed the finish line. The first 53-mile runner won in 8 hours, 51 minutes and 10 seconds, and they continued to cross the line for many hours after that. This trip was meaningful, rewarding and special for all of us.
